30 years have passed since the devastating earthquake of Spitak. December 7, 1988 is one of the most tragic pages of the contemporary history of Armenia. That day at 11:41 the northern regions of the country were shaken by a devastating earthquake. The epicenter was Spitak. More than 25,000 people died, tens of thousands were injured and hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
Good people from all over the world rushed to help our people. Unfortunately, the airplane of the Serbian pilots bringing help to Armenia, crushed on Ejmiatsin-Armavir road. All the members of the crew died. The grateful Armenian nation made a monument from the pieces of the crushed airplane at the place where the accident happened. Every year here, near this monument, the people of Ejmiatsin honor the memory of the victims. The Municipality of Ejmiatsin and active citizens, led by Mayor Diana Gasparyan, laid flowers and wreaths at the memorial to the Serbian pilots, paying tribute to both the victims of Spitak earthquake and the Serbian pilots.
